If You Love Me... Obey!

“If you love me, you will obey what I command.”   John 14:15

It had finally arrived! The day she should have been waiting for for over three years. Back then he had hurt her so deeply that her pain seemed as though it would never end. He always had the upper hand. Though he was in the wrong, by all the world’s standards he was the winner. He’d taken her love and treated it cheaply. His unfaithfulness left her broken time and again. And now he had the new wife, the new house, a new dream fulfilled. And in the wake he’d left her broken. She was the one who was left reeling. Picking up the pieces of her broken heart though she’d done no wrong. Yes, today should have been the day she would celebrate! The day to ‘stick it to him’ just once. All the events fell in her favor. Timing was perfect. The people in place. The stage set. But as the curtain began to rise and show time approached… she called off the show.

In her brokenness she’d clung to the Lord. He’s been so faithful. He’d worked her through the pain and loneliness. He’d brought her family and friends to help carry her when the pain was too great to bear alone.  He’d provided finances and given her courage to work hard. He’d made a way for her to continue relationships that divorce often severs. Yes, God had been faithful. And now, she had the chance to prove her love for her God in one small way…Obey His Word.

God asks us to walk with him in faith. As we walk with Him we become more and more aware of his voice, his laws, and his desires. Out of love for him and a new understanding of his sacrifice for us, we do not want to offend the cross by breaking God’s laws. We don’t obey his laws out of obligation. We don’t obey them legalistically. We obey out of sheer love. And in that we bless our God!

“Forgive as the Lord forgave you.” Colossians 3:13

“Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing.”
1 Peter 3:9
