True Wealth

"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasure in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also." Matt. 6:19-21

My husband and I have been trying to look at our belongings, our finances and our time. What needs to be realigned? I began looking for God's perspective and here's what he showed me.

Store up: accumulate for future use
For yourselves: selfish motive, to gratify and glorify one's self
Treasures: quantity of precious metals, gems or other valuable objects,
cash, wealth of any kind or in any form
Where moth and vermin destroy and where thieves break in and steal:
What can be stolen? material possessions, money, earthly things
What can't be destroyed?  Godly relationships, love given and received, time with Jesus in
                 prayer and study
Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also: Am I more concerned about earthly material wealth, prestige, possessions or do I wake up excited to share Christ with family, friends, and others?

Matt. 6:24 says, "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money."

When these two verses are combined, Jesus seems to be telling us that either our material possessions serve God or they serve us. If they are not being used for God's glory then it's time to reevaluate. We must be willing to let go of anything that is just being stored up for future use whether in the form of prestige, possession, or pride.

Lord, help us to use the things you've blessed us with to be a blessing to others. Help us to honestly reevaluate and realign our material wealth with your will. Amen
