Why Must We Be Disciplined?

While we were children, our parents did what seemed best to them. But God is doing what is best for us, training us to live God's holy best. At the time, discipline isn't much fun. It always feels like it's going against the grain. Later, of course, it pays off handsomely, for it's the well trained who find themselves mature in their relationship with God. Hebrews 12:10-11 MSG

In having to discipline one of my children, I'm seeking wisdom from scripture. How does God discipline us? Why does he discipline us? I really want to discipline my child in a way that bears fruit, breaks the will, but doesn't break the spirit.

Why does God discipline us?
Scripture tells us that God disciplines us because he loves us. He wants us to be mature in our lifestyle and in our relationship with Him. Proverbs 3:11-12 says.. My son, do not despise the LORD'S discipline or be weary of his reproof, for the LORD reproves him whom he loves as a father the son in whom he delights. God is more concerned about our holiness than our happiness. God wants us to grow up and be an amazing person in his kingdom. He is training us for living in eternity!
Many people believe that the Christian life should be a life without trials and pains. However that is not correct at all. Through sickness, sorrow and pain, we learn to live God's way.

How does God discipline us?
God uses tests, trials, and circumstances to bring us back to him. Consequences are allowed by God so that we seek him with repentant hearts and ultimately end in a more intimate relationship with him.
James 1:2-4 tell us this... Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking nothing.

Circumstances and trials do not come to us without first being approved by God. In each and every situation we are being taught lessons. God is working in multiple ways and in multiple lives through any given circumstance. Situations don't always end happily (as in death or loss), but if we love the Lord, they will accomplish his good purposes! The question we should be asking is not 'When will this pain end?' but rather, 'What am I to be learning?'

Dear Lord,
At the time of discipline, we have a hard time thanking you for what you are doing in our lives. Help us to change our mindset about situations. Show us your discipline and help us to readily receive and respond in ways that honor you. Train us to be your holy children because you are holy!
Amen
