"But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgement for every careless word they have spoken. For by your words you will be acquitted and by your words you will be condemned." Matthew 12:36-37
Dear Friends,
Our words hold power! They literally have the power of life and death, both for ourselves and for others.
We will stand before our God and give account for each word that we have spoken. Our words will either prove us to be his children, or they will prove us to have spoken on behalf of the enemy. Our desire should be to honor God with each word we speak. Did you hear that? EACH word we speak. That means the ones we utter, mutter, shout or simply speak, but regardless of how we allow them to leave our mouth, we will be held accountable. Our words will free us or condemn us before a holy and just God.
God will hold us responsible for the words we have used to bring life to others and for the words that broke their hearts. EACH word you speak to or about another person has lasting impact. Words either undermine authority or enhance respect. Words build relationships or tear them down. Words spoken in anger fuel the fire while gentle words bring resolution and healing. Colossians 4:6 tells us to, "Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one." We must die to ourselves each day so that the Spirit can season our words with grace and love. Words left to our own control will most likely result in pain or conflict. So, determine today to think before you speak, pray before you respond, and when necessary refrain from words at all.
It may sound silly, but lately when I've been tempted to speak words that aren't "seasoned" I simply stop and respond with, "I love you." You just can't go wrong with these 3 little words!
Dear Lord,
Today we offer our words to you. Fill us with your Spirit that our words may be covered in grace and love. Guard our lips that we will only speak words of beauty and life. Seal our lips when ugly or discouraging words want to pass through them. Lord, let our words reflect our love for you!
In your precious name we pray,
Amen
