When the dew evaporated, a flaky substance as fine as frost blanketed the ground. The Israelites were puzzled when they saw it. “What is it?” they asked each other. They had no idea what it was.
And Moses told them, “It is the food the Lord has given you to eat. These are the Lord’s instructions: Each household should gather as much as it needs. Pick up two quarts for each person in your tent.”
Exodus 16:14-16
The Israelites where lost in the desert about a month after escaping slavery in Egypt. They were hungry and angry about their situation, blaming God for not providing them with enough food and water, they believed they would have been better off had they stayed in Egypt. God heard their complaints and answered them by sending food down from heaven.
God didn't place the food in their hands, the manna didn't just show up in their kitchen. The people had to gather it up every day and be very careful not to get any more than they needed. Just like manna provided in the desert, we have been provided with the Bread of Life, Jesus (John 6:35). And just like the Israelites, we need to gather up that life giving bread every day. We need to go to Jesus and fill up on just what we need in that moment and for that day. We need not worry about tomorrow: Great is his faithfulness; his mercies begin afresh each morning (Lamentations 3:23).
